Located in Amsterdam-Noord's Hamerkwartier, Café Voorwaarts occupies the top floor of a former machine factory from the early twentieth century, later subdivided into four separate dwellings and now opened up again into a single 600m² space. The building carries a rich history and called for an interior that balances scale with intimacy. Central to the renovation is a bar rescued from Café de Nagel on the Zeedijk, restored complete with its original neon signs and stained glass, and reinstalled as the heart of the space. The venue brings together a traditional Dutch brown café, restaurant and exhibition space, with century-old floral wallpaper still lining the walls.
