Het Koelhuis, designed by Nicolaas Lansdorp in 1930, is situated on the Food Center terrain in Amsterdam and is one out of two buildings on the premise that is still authentic. Het Koelhuis features a monumental mural of Keith Haring dating back to 1986 that became hidden from view to resurface again in 2018. Rubiks is repurposing the monument into a permanent cultural institution. Het Koelhuis its one-meter-thick soundproof and windowless walls are a perfect match with this new purpose – a cultural melting pot with a crowd that enjoys the small hours of the morning and the high decibels at night, all within the city center. Rubiks serves as a creative representation of all the spatial possibilities and the multitude of subcultures welcomed.
